A Great God Who Does Great Things

Our God is a great God who does great things in a great way. There is nothing that our Lord does that is ordinary, adequate, or satisfactory. Everything He does is perfect all the time. The Psalmist said in Psalm 86:10, “For You are great, and do wondrous things; You alone are God.”

God deals outside the realm of human possibilities and abilities and shows His mighty power through our weaknesses. Even the word “great” is not sufficient to describe our God and His works. When we fail in our Christian walk it is because we do not appreciate, accept, and appropriate God’s great power in the way we live our lives on a daily basis. By relying on ourselves instead of on God, we fall into the sin of idolatry.

We see time and time again throughout the Scriptures that God uses ordinary men to do extraordinary things for His glory. Little is much when God is in it. Psalm 147:5 says, “Great is our Lord, and mighty in power; His understanding is infinite.” J. I. Packer once said, “A little knowledge of God is worth more than a great deal of knowledge about Him.”

When Scottish theologian John Baillie taught at Edinburg University, he made it a practice to open his course on the doctrine of God with these words: “We must remember, in discussing God, that we cannot talk about Him without His hearing every word we say. We may be able to talk about others behind their backs, but God is everywhere, yes, even in this classroom. Therefore, in all our discussions we must be aware of His infinite presence and talk about Him, as it were, before His face.”

Oh, that we would live in humble, grateful, and joyful appreciation of who God is, what He has done, what He will do, and how we fit into His eternal plan of the ages. He has given us a great salvation. He has provided for us great and wonderful blessings, and our future is clearly great. Someone once said, “God is before me, He will be my guide; God is behind me, no ill can betide; God is beside me, to comfort and cheer; God is around me, so why should I fear?” Let us continue to follow His will and trust Him to do great things in our lives.
