In God We Trust

The phrase, “In God We Trust,” does not mean very much to the average American today. Oh, it is on our coins, currency and is found on some buildings, but the Founding Fathers of our nation actually lived by it. They really did trust God for everything and envisioned a land where God would be honored, glorified and where every man, woman and child would rely on God in everything and for everything.

Very few people today experience trusting God in their personal lives. Only those who are saved realize that they cannot live in this world without the Lord’s direct help, intervention and working on their behalf. The moment we begin to rely on ourselves, we are bound to fall. As a nation, as a church, and as individuals we need the Lord. We need His guidance, His strength and His help on a daily basis.

The psalmist said, “It is better to trust in the Lord than to put confidence in man. It is better to trust in the Lord than to put confidence in princes” (Psalm 118:8,9). People and things are unreliable, unstable and untrustworthy and can fail us at any time, but when we trust in our Lord Jesus Christ we can have the utmost confidence. He will never fail us. He is always faithful.

Stuart Briscoe wrote, “The fact of the matter is that I take refuge in the Lord. Unashamedly I run to Him. In fact, if it were not for the ready access I have to Him, I would never survive the ministry. The pressures would be more than I could take. I hide myself away with Him. I crawl into a corner and talk to Him. When the pressure is on, I pull the drapes and commune with Him. I take refuge in Him.”

There are more references to trusting God in the Psalms than any other book of the Bible. One such reference is Psalm 20:7 where David said, “Some trust in chariots and some in horses; but we will trust in the name of the Lord our God.” Let us trust our Lord no matter the circumstances, no matter the obstacles, no matter what. God alone is in control and He is able to work everything out according to His will. T-R-U-S-T is truly resting under sovereign towers. Just remember, “In God We Trust.”
